When our VP of Design asked how we could bring more delight — or “magic” — to eBay’s buying and selling experiences, I saw an opportunity to rethink what magic really meant for our customers. Too often, design teams defaulted to surface-level touches, like confetti on success screens or decorative illustrations that added more noise than value. I led the creation of a framework to uncover more meaningful ways to surprise and support customers at the moments that mattered most.
eBay’s vast ecosystem, with its millions of sellers and buyers, thrives on utility — helping users get from intent to action as smoothly as possible. But utility doesn’t have to be devoid of joy. We wanted to design experiences that felt surprisingly beautiful, effortlessly simple, and distinctly eBay. To get there, I leaned on a metaphor I’ve used throughout my career — thinking of design as a volume dial. Not every moment should be turned up to 10. Some moments call for quiet elegance, others for bursts of personality. With that mindset, we built a flexible framework to guide how we identify, design, and scale these moments of magic across the platform.
This framework isn’t just a tool for designers — it became a shared language across design, product, and engineering teams, helping us prioritize which moments deserved that extra craft and intention. It gave us a spectrum of "magic," from subtle refinements that remove friction to moments of emotional resonance and even signature touches that feel uniquely eBay. That clarity gave us the confidence to experiment — and the alignment to move fast.
We kicked off with a one-day design charette in San Francisco, bringing together partners from design, engineering, product, brand, and marketing. The goal was to align on what "magic" meant for eBay and to gather inspiration from brands outside our space — companies like Pinterest, Robinhood, and Shazam, who use design to build trust, spark curiosity, or make complex actions feel effortless. That broad perspective helped us ground eBay’s approach not in trends, but in timeless design principles rooted in human behavior.
The Magic Moments framework is built around three tiers — Simple, Emotional, and Unique. Each tier represents a different volume of magic, from removing friction to fostering personal connection to reinforcing eBay’s distinct brand promise. These aren’t abstract ideals — they became criteria for product decisions, helping teams weigh how much magic a moment needed, and how to craft it in ways that felt intuitive and intentional.
Smooth and frictionless, with minimal interruptions or distractions. This means optimizing load times, reducing the number of steps required to complete a task, and minimizing the amount of manual input required from users.
Interactions and experiences are personalized to the user's preferences and interests, providing them with unique and relevant moments that reflect their values.
Key interactions, moments or experiences that that reinforce brand pillars and are uniquely ebay.
The redesigned Place Bid flow simplifies the number of steps, brings the product imagery forward, and keeps users in control with lightweight interactions that feel modern and clear.

It’s been deeply rewarding to watch the concepts we dreamed up in 2023 come to life across eBay’s ecosystem. Tools like the Magical Listing Tool have dramatically increased seller engagement and contributed to meaningful growth — both in user satisfaction and in revenue. But the real magic is in how these moments continue to evolve. What feels delightful today quickly becomes expected tomorrow. The Magic Moments Framework gives us the tools and shared language to keep pushing forward, exploring new ways to surprise and support our users — all while staying grounded in the reality of how they actually use eBay.
Because at its best, magic isn’t just about visual polish or clever animations. It’s about giving people the sense that this experience was made for them — that eBay understands their goals, anticipates their needs, and occasionally, gives them something they didn’t even know to ask for.
What magic is now may fade over time into something that just works
Magic is hard to define... But the feeling of magic is easier to identify and put on a spectrum...
Magic is not just a single element or moment it is a series of movements or a flow...
Magic at a high level is an experience that simply works seamlessly.
Magic moments need to meet users where they are and anticipate their needs
The “world effect” - Every element feels like it could only exist in this experience. “this is so uniquely ebay”
